To inform Cabinet of the requirement to relocate the weekly Margate Market to a new site, and request Cabinet support that following the move the Council takes on the responsibility for the management of Margate market.

THAT Cabinet supports the Council relocating the weekly Margate market to Cecil Square and takes on responsibility for managing the market.

Reasons for the decision:

To safeguard the Margate weekly general market

Alternative options considered:

Margate loses its weekly general market. Other sites were considered and rejected due to their size/ location/ cost/ highway safety /permission from owners.

Councillor Jo Gideon who writes on behalf of Councillor King that the reasons for call-in are: a) As a venue, Cecil Square will not allow for the market to grow, limiting it to about 24 stalls/pitches: b) The report outlines all the benefits and importance of the market to help regeneration, but then effectively seems to argue against all the reaons that are curcial to success - transport, highways, shops, position etc; c) We are not making enough of the potential of the market on the Cecil Square site."
