Purpose:

Proposals to consult on introducing a Council Tax empty homes premium from 1 April 2015. This will result in council tax of 150 per cent being charged for properties that have been empty and unfurnished for more than two years.

Decision:

Cabinet approved going out to consultation for a month on introducing a “long term empty” premium for Council Tax. A report will be produced at the end of the period setting out the results and recommended next steps.

Reasons for the decision:

To enable consultation to take place on the introduction of A Council Tax Empty Homes premium. This could result in 150% Council Tax being charged on empty unfurnished properties, which could generate up to £140,000 in additional Council Tax.
