Petition regarding Condemnation of Racism, Xenophobia and Hate Crimes across Thanet

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

The petition presented to the Council on the 13th October, 2016 and then referred to Cabinet. Cabinet reiterated the position that was stated at Full Council which is that Council did not condone any form of hate crime, racial abuse or xenophobic behaviour. No-one should ever find themselves targeted by violence or hatred because of the colour of their skin, their religion, gender, sexuality or disability. Council does support the principles of the stand against hate campaign.

Decision:

Cabinet agreed to report back to Council that since through its actions, Council are already showing its opposition to racism, xenophobia and hate-crimes, the petition is unnecessary.

Reasons for the decision:

Cabinet was reiterating the position that was made at Full Council in order to continue to maintain community cohesion in the district and inform the public that Council working with community safety partners are committed to tackling hate crime. This has featured as one of the actions within the community safety plan for a number of years, and that includes initiatives such as SHARP (Stop Hate and Related Prejudice), Hate crime reporting line, and delivery of the PREVENT programme.

Alternative options considered:

None considered.
