Establishing the Climate Emergency Cabinet Advisory Group

Decision Maker: Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Strategy and Transformation

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

The council called a climate emergency on 11th July 2019.

As part of this declaration the Council has resolved to:

  • Pledge to do what is within our powers and resources to make Thanet District Council carbon neutral by 2030, taking into account both production and consumption emissions;
  • Call on Westminster to provide the powers and resources to make the 2030 target possible;
  • Continue to work with partners across the County and region to deliver this new goal through all relevant strategies;
  • Investigate all possible sources of external funding and match funding to support this commitment;

Following this, a cross party Climate Change Emergency Working Group was established and focussed on thestrategic development and delivery of the initial action plan.

In September 2020, the council employed a Climate Change Officer whose role was to lead the council in the Climate Change Strategy. The initial action plan is now being amended and full strategies are being developed

Decision:

Establishing the Climate Emergency Cabinet Advisory Group made up of eight members whose composition and terms of reference are detailed in the document attached to the decision.

Reasons for the decision:

The Leader has requested that the CCWG is reconstituted as a Cabinet Advisory Group. This will enable the group to consider specific aspects of the emerging strategies and advise the cabinet accordingly.

Alternative options considered:

The alternative is to not accept the proposal. This was considered and rejected as climate change is a priority for the council and the cabinet advisory group will facilitate efficient progress of the council's aims.
